An Invalid Stop Loss/Take Profit (SL/TP) error occurs in your Trading terminal when trying to set up a pending order. It could happen due to the reasons below. Read on for tips on how to resolve these errors.
Invalid SL/TP error
This error mainly happens when a pending order is placed in the wrong direction, check the tips below to avoid this error:
Choose the right pending order
Make sure the right kind of pending order is being used as they behave differently, which means errors can happen if they are used incorrectly.
Here’s a brief guide on how to set up the pending order price (while opening an order):
| Pending order type | Price direction |
| Buy Stop | Set above current ask price |
| Sell Stop | Set below current bid price |
| Buy Limit | Set below current ask price |
| Sell Limit | Set above current bid price |
For example 1.20042/1.20064
The first amount is the bid price and the second amount is the ask price. Learn more about bid and ask prices.
Important: It is not possible to set a pending order including SL/TP at the current prices because of the technical limitations of the Trading terminal.
Read more about stop levels to avoid mistakes when setting up pending orders.
Confirm stop loss and take profit (SL/TP) prices are set correctly
The stop loss and take profit prices set must match the order type (buy or sell) at closing and the chosen pending order.
Take profit
Take profit is a pending order, set with the expectation of a better price, that will automatically close the order when the set amount of profit is reached.
Stop loss
Stop loss is a pending order, set with the expectation of a worse price, that will automatically close the order when the set amount of loss is reached.
Follow the instructions below depending on your order type and chosen pending order:
| Order Type | Pending order | Price Direction |
| Buy | Stop Loss | Set below the current bid price |
| Take Profit | Set above the current bid price | |
| Sell | Stop Loss | Set above the current ask price |
| Take Profit | Set below the current ask price |
Please keep in mind that as stop loss and take profit can be set any time after an order is placed, the expectation of profit or loss must be based on the current price as the pending order is set, and not the opening price of the order. It is possible to close an order with take profit that still results in a loss because it was set at a price worse than the opening price; the inverse is true for stop loss.
